New Hunter S. Thompson Documentary
This is the trailer for the fun-loving but poignant film that is a tribute to Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson, and a document of how his legacy continues to live on in the hearts and minds of his fans. Blasted!!! follows the many "Gonzo Patriots" across America that volunteered their personally owned artillery to fulfill the good doctor's last wish to have his ashes fired from a cannon. Before Johnny Depp became involved with the ceremony, and paid over 2 million dollars for a professional fireworks company to blast his friend's ashes from a 200 foot tall 'Gonzo fist,' an essay contest was held by the Aspen Daily News (at the request of Hunter's family) to see who would be available to provide the service of firing his ashes. Over 50 private cannon owners applied and though these letters were published in Harper's magazine, these brave men and women, who had come forward to fulfill the dying wish of their hero...were eventually forgotten.

DVD's for this film can be purchased at www.gonzopatriots.com

Blue Kraning, Los Angeles based documentary director and Emmy Award winning writer, has just released the DVD of his film, Blasted, The Gonzo Patriots of Hunter S. Thompson, which recently premiered at the Starz Denver International Film Festival and the Rotterdam International Film Festival.

Three years in the making, this film is a tribute to a great journalist and renowned physician. Kraning says the film, “is intended for any fan of Hunter S. Thompson or just anyone who likes to see large stuffed animals blown to bits by a homemade Bowling Ball Cannon fired by a man in a purple polyester suit, or see transgender Civil War re-enactors blast their aptly named mountain howitzer...’Lucrecia,’ while reciting Hunter’s wisdom. I made this film entirely as a one-man-band, in the tradition of Gonzo individuality and artistic freedom, so I will be distributing the film entirely by myself by selling the film off my website at www.gonzopatriots.com”

"Hunter S. Thompson embodied the American ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Blue Kraning's Blasted!!! is a twisted, anarchic, fun, and funny tribute to Hunter, those ideals, and Americans who don't merely mouth the Declaration of Independence, but live it." - Michael Simmons, The Huffington Post

“These are not the famous actors, politicians or even journalists. These are Hunter's readers who are “his people” in the purest sense, an army of thoughtful citizens who are inspired by Hunter's work and who do a fine job of carrying on his legacy.” –Anita Thompson, wife of the late author, Hunter S. Thompson

(Sorry for the short lead time)

INFORMATION (FAQ) ABOUT THE ORIGINAL UNIVERSE

I figured I’d share some Q&A on a new venture:

Q: So what is The Original Universe?

A: It’s close to the works produced by Dr. Jerry Bails, Roy Thomas in the first incarnation of ALTER EGO, and the zines that Len Wein and Marv Wolfman contributed to in their early lives -- except that I only compare in kind, not in quality! I don’t think that big of myself.

A fanzine has a much smaller financial requirements from its membership -even no cost. In fact, the Usual could require nothing more than a regular Letter of Comment [LOC] (I’ll explain both of these later in this missive).

Q: Where’s “The Original Universe” name come from?

A: A few years ago DC Comics used this name to promote some of their product, to separate it from Elseworlds stories.

I found the name ironic; the original universe at DC was really the original multiverse pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths. DC now has another multiverse after 52, but the damage has been done to many characters as different writers tried to tack on more origin ideas. It also lead to calling characters ‘radioactive’ when too much messing around made them untouchable, as well as the dreaded ‘retcon’ (retroactive continuity) word, when everything about the characters was changed yet again for new continuity. A prime example: The Legion of Superheroes now in its fifth history rewrite - although there are seeming originals in the present day at the moment.

Many of us in this zine were readers before Crisis, so we know where everything came from. Parts of this zine will hopefully celebrate that past.

Q: Who are you?

A: In 1990 I originated COMICOPIA, a comicbook APA. This I contributed to for 100 issues, more than 16 years. I began writing for APAs 6 months earlier, and at one time was a member of 4 of them.

I’m a 4-time winner of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) [so far; it’s 2007 when I write this]. As of June 30th I added 1st-time Script Frenzy winner to my resume. I got a BfA in Cinema: Animation Option in May 1990, so it’s about time I used it! :)

I’ve had 13 letters published in comics to date, and so far have 5 tabletop roleplaying game publishing credits (as of July 2007), 4 of them in super-hero games. At least 2 more will come out this year.

As you can read, I have a lot of know-how here... not to mention collecting comics for more than 26 years!

Q: Just what is “the Usual”?

A: This is a tradition with zines, in ways similar to Minac. It takes several forms:

i. Letters of comment (LOCs). My fellow APA-folks will be familiar with this. They are like MCs, only shorter. Often they are about 2-3 pages of text before the font size is reduced. They can be comments on the zine itself, comments replying to other LOCs... they tend to share the vibrancy of MCs like that.

Even if you contribute other things to the zine, you’re encouraged to still LOC for this reason.

ii. Cover art / illustrations

There’s a zine tradition called “fillos”: small illustrations to go as fill between long blocks of text.

Likewise, I hope contributors can provide artwork for covers. Some such artists have gone on to wider exposure and awards.

iii.articles

One zine I’m a part of prints several pieces by others. Some are reprints from FAPA (the now-legendary F/SF APA that’s been around for over 50 years so far); some are columns from his mom on the incredible travels she’s gone on worldwide... and one deals with the life of a man as he went through WW 2 as a soldier.

The Original Universe deals with comicbooks, so pieces will most likely cover that. Some of them may be original fiction, from me or others; I print them up at no additional cost to readers (if from others, obviously), but please be mindful the length isn’t too great (4 pages max).

Some of it can just have a link to comics as thin as the fact all who write for it / read it are comic fans. I’m not going to push for anything more strict than that -- and since we all are fans anyway, that will not come into question. I hope for more comicbook content, but if I’m the sole provider for that, it’s fine.

iii. Letters of Comment (LOCs)

As I said, these can be similar to the MCs we APA folks are accustomed to.

LOCs as e-mail are fine. I send my LOCs to my 2 other zines that way. You don’t have to worry about formatting; that’s my deal.

iv. zine exchanges

This is another longtime tradition for zines: trading your zine for mine.

Q: Is this an electronic zine?

A: No. I’ve already spoken at length over the years on how I have a dislike for electronic-only zines. There’s an archive of electronic zines at efanzines.com , and I may well store zines after the fact there, but the originals will indeed be printed and mailed first.

Q: Are there rules for flame wars?

A: Nothing official, just a simple guideline: I read everything before I print it. If it’s just there to start a fight, I leave it out. In general we’re mature enough not to pick fights anyway, so I likely won’t even need to use this guideline.

Q: Is there a subscription fee?

A: Not an enforced one. There is a voluntary one (another form of “the Usual”), but it isn’t a necessity. It’s not a huge dent: $3 US per sample issue, $12 for a year. I’m staying with a bi-monthly schedule.

Would I like people to subscribe? Of course! Any subscription funds will go straight to paying for photocopies and mailing.

Q: Are there MinAc rules? (Minimum Activity. An APA term)

A: Yes and no. Yes, because you have to contribute the Usual every 2 issues or you drop out. No, because subscribers still receive issues until their subscriptions run out (if they’re subscribed). I’ll let you know an issue before, so you’ll have approximately 2 months to re-subscribe. You just don’t get feedback unless you LOC as well.

There are no concepts like Member or Waiting lists. If you contribute non-flames, I print you.

Q: How long in pagecount will this be?

A: Well what I’d love is a 32-page zine, but the ones I’ve seen at that length are 15-20 years old. I’ll be starting at 12 pages. More will just be gravy, but 32 will be the maximum for now. I just received one in early May that was 46 pages, but for me that’s just crazy.

(I just realized: it may be shorter for financial and content reasons.)

Q: When will this all start?

A: The mail-out date for issue 1 will be July 16th. It might be a few days later because of schedule logistics, but I’ll make a huge try.

I hope you all join in! Contact: theoriginaluniverse(at)gmail(dot)com

attention and unless we act very soon the consequences for our society could well be
disastrous. And it will only take place because it is being done without any public
awareness or participation; it goes directly against the very foundations of freedom of the
press in the entirety of American history.

The U.S. Post Office is in the process of implementing a radical reformulation of its rates
for magazines, such that smaller periodicals will be hit with a much much larger increase
than the largest magazines.

Because the Post Office is a monopoly, and because magazines must use it, the postal rates
always have been skewed to make it cheaper for smaller publications to get launched and to
survive. The whole idea has been to use the postal rates to keep publishing as competitive
and wide open as possible. This bedrock principle was put in place by James Madison and
Thomas Jefferson. They considered it mandatory to create the press system, the Fourth
Estate necessary for self-government.

It was postal policy that converted the free press clause in the First Amendment from an
abstract principle into a living breathing reality for Americans. And it has served that
role throughout our history.

What the Post Office is now proposing goes directly against 215 years of postal policy. The
Post Office is in the process of implementing a radical reformulation of its mailing rates
for magazines. Under the plan, smaller periodicals will be hit with a much larger increase
than the big magazines, as much as 30 percent. Some of the largest circulation magazines
will face hikes of less than 10 percent.

The new rates, which go into effect on July 15, were developed with no public involvement
or congressional oversight, and the increased costs could damage hundreds, even thousands,
of smaller publications, possibly putting many out of business. This includes nearly every
political journal in the nation. These are the magazines that often provide the most
original journalism and analysis. These are the magazines that provide much of the content
on Common Dreams. We desperately need them.

What the Post Office is planning to do now, in the dark of night, is implement a rate
structure that gives the best prices to the biggest publishers, hence letting them lock in
their market position and lessen the threat of any new competition. The new rates could
make it almost impossible to launch a new magazine, unless it is spawned by a huge
conglomerate.

Not surprisingly, the new scheme was drafted by Time Warner, the largest magazine publisher
in the nation. All evidence available suggests the bureaucrats responsible have never
considered the implications of their draconian reforms for small and independent
publishers, or for citizens who depend upon a free press.

The corruption and sleaziness of this process is difficult to exaggerate. As one lawyer who
works for a large magazine publisher admits, ^SIt takes a publishing company several
hundred thousand dollars to even participate in these rate cases. Some large corporations
spend millions to influence these rates.^T Little guys, and the general public who depend
upon these magazines, are not at the table when the deal is being made.

The genius of the postal rate structure over the past 215 years was that it did not favor a
particular viewpoint; it simply made it easier for smaller magazines to be launched and to
survive. That is why the publications opposing the secretive Post Office rate hikes cross
the political spectrum. This is not a left-wing issue or a right-wing issue, it is a
democracy issue. And it is about having competitive media markets that benefit all
Americans. This reform will have disastrous effects for all small and mid-sized
publications, be they on politics, music, sports or gardening.

This process was conducted with such little publicity and pitched only at the dominant
players that we only learned about it a few weeks ago and it is very late in the game. But
there is something you can do. Please go to www.stoppostalratehikes.com and sign the letter
to the Postal Board protesting the new rate system and demanding a congressional hearing
before any radical changes are made. The deadline for comments is April 23.

I know many of you are connected to publications that go through the mail, or libraries and
bookstores that pay for subscriptions to magazines and periodicals. If you fall in these
categories, it is imperative you get everyone connected to your magazine or operation to go
to www.stoppostalratehikes.com.

We do not have a moment to lose. If everyone who reads this email responds at
www.stoppostalratehikes.com, and then sends it along to their friends urging them to do the
same, we can win. If there is one thing we have learned at Free Press over the past few
years, it is that if enough people raise hell, we can force politicians to do the right
thing. This is a time for serious hell-raising.

And to my friends from outside the United States, I apologize for cluttering your inbox. If
you read this far, we can use your moral support.

From the bottom of my heart, thanks.

The Known World of Zines Now 1,000 Times Larger

CHICAGO - Feb. 12, 2007 - ZineWiki.com, a Web site devoted to zines, independent publications and their publishers, reached 1,000 articles in the first week of February, just seven months after the project first launched.

ZineWiki was created by Alan Lastufka and Kate Sandler to document the vibrant underground publishing world. The result has been an ever-growing guide to fanzines, chapbooks, zines and small-press publishers which The Portland Mercury said "could herald a new era of zines." Karl Wenclas, co-founder of the Underground Literary Alliance, has called ZineWiki "a sign of new life."

Like Wikipedia, ZineWiki is an open-source database welcoming contributions from anyone, and striving for neutrality and accuracy. There now are hundreds of contributers. "It’s been great seeing so many people stepping up and contributing. Each person has his or her own area of focus, favorite genres or zinesters, to add or revise," Lastufka commented, "I’ve learned so much just from editing the articles others have submitted.”

Added Sandler, “ZineWiki is an online window into an offline world. It offers people a glimpse at the undercurrent of print publications that otherwise go undocumented."

In September 2006, the Chicago-based print magazine Punk Planet partnered with ZineWiki.com to offer exclusive online content including the article, "Unofficial Histories: Zine and Ephemeral Print Archivists," by Anne Elizabeth Moore. Other media sponsors have included Clamor Magazine and Broken Pencil magazine. SuperNaturale.com said, “As it grows, it's conceivable that ZineWiki could even act as a universal central catalog for zine librarians."

From the history, production, and distribution of the small press, to its writers, culture and publications, ZineWiki provides an overall view of the underground publishing world. While hitting 1,000 articles is a big step for ZineWiki, there is much more to come from this growing and exciting Web site.
This art culture toolset reflects meaning from many mediums. It is a collection of essays, poems, design and artwork illustrating creative potentials for a culture in transition. This fourth chapter completes a visionary storyboard, tracing a lineage of magic, myth and medicine through the collective history of this metamediated present moment mythology. These are fables spun from the starry filaments of a dreaming universe, human chapters tracing their roots back to the first shimmer of creative consciousness.

there are those moments when the world drops in dense and light
when the mythical implications of an everyday moment
illuminate the matrix of story within which our lives
unfold their sacred origami

I am starting a new on-line 'zine sort of thing called 'i dunno'. it's mainly an outlet for funny/creative writing, as well as pop culture and punk rock. It's a pretty goofy website, and I'm hoping that the strength of the writing on 'i dunno' will be enough to make up for my lack of web design skills. Basically, it's a forum for making fun of anything and quite possibly everything.

One of the most substantial problems that zine publishers face every so often is the ever-increasing price of postage. Come January, a first class stamp will cost 39 cents. Of course the Post Office finds that sort of increase unavoidable. I find it to be inconvenient (again). Therefore, the question at hand is what to do about it? I think the answer to that question is to do more zine work on the Internet and less zine work in print and through the snail mail. I mean, the Post Office isn't going to lower the price of stamps just because I don't like it. And with many Internet services being free, then I feel compelled to go where the free stuff is. Since that's the case, I plan to find a way to make money off of web comics. Can anybody help me there?

Anyway, the ever increasing price of stamps may eventually end zinedom altogether, or force zinesters to use the Internet more. Or at least that's two possibilities.

Also, the con further proved my "Population of 6 Billion" theory. That is, since there's apopulation of 6 billion, there exists a small yet substantial number of people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics! Moreover, the secret to my success at SNAP! doesn't really seem that secret. SNAP! had a focus on small press comics. While the comic cons I previously attended -- which were mostly unsuccessful for me -- had a focus on mainstream comics.

Yup! That's what I'm talkin' about! If you want to sell small press comics at a comic convention, then you need to go to a convention whose focus is on small press comics. Again I say, SNAP! kicked ass, and there's still a population of 6 billion!

I'm looking for short stories, poetry, possilby some excerpts from longer fiction. I received some material from a writer that is pretty good but completely wrong for the anthology. There is one poem I can use as it is currently written, an autobiographical essay I might be able to use if it was tweaked a little and more openly poly. But this being on the editor end of things is disconcerting.

Does anybody ever send a piece back and say rewrite it? Do you tell the person what you're looking for? In this case, I'm the one who wasn't clear. I could just say "no thanks" but my goal is to build community as well as publish so I'm inclined to try a different approach. Looking for experience out there, especially from editor/publishers.

We got two pages of alternative print media reviews - zines, books and such in this issue (things that we feel good and positive about) in the latest issue (Profane Existence, Fear And Loathing, Socialism, Load Of Noise, SchNews and such....) . We'll be doing the same in the November edition if we encounter anything that excites enough to make us want to write about it zine wise, got one or two goodies already......

So if you have a zine or some kind of alternative print publication and you want some coverage (and you're not just about sucking up to big PR companies to get on guest lists and get latest crap emo-by-numbers album that's out on some couldn't-care-less-about-the-music-let's-see-the-profit-margin-major-label for free) then get in touch.....

If you've got a zine you think we should be shouting our opinionated big mouths off about then fire it at us by October 19th and we'll fire you some of our stuff back at you (with coverage of what you're up to) in return - you'll also see a few review up on the on-line weekly version of Organ as www.organart.com

There needs to be a bit more zine unity and creativity out there, a few more real alternatives to the corporate crap..... who's out there? Who wants to communicate?

As for webzines? Yeah, we feel a big feature about the good ones coming on? Have you got one? Should we know about it? Are there any good ones out there offering real alternatives? I don't mean your Drowned in Sound type corporate cock sucking NME-wannabe bulshit type websites, I meal real ones offering real alternative information and exciting coverage of
the real music that's out there if you look..... Shout now, tell us what you're about, what you know, what you're up to, get involved, use your organ, communicate - on the other hand if you're think we're full of shit, then fine, hit your delete button and have a nice day
I run a webzine called Girlysounds. You can find it at http://www.girlysounds.com . I'm looking for feminist responses to books, music, and movies. That's pretty flexible: you can review art by women, feminist art, and art which deserves feminist critique. Please keep reviews of albums and movies to 500 words, and reviews of books to 1,000 words.

I'm also looking to provide a space for feminist voices, by featuring poetry & prose from feminist writers. I add new pieces to the site at the end of every week. Again, I'm looking for short pieces, ranging from 500 to 1,000 words. This week, I'm looking for stories about how your feminism relates to your creativity. However, feel free to send anything that seems applicable to the mission and feel of our site -- even if we can't use it at the moment, we may use it later. You'll be notified if and when your piece is accepted, and you'll get a byline, which comes in handy when you want to promote your writing.

So I publish my own little e-zine and I found that occassionally someone will link to one of the photos in my site. While it's nice to know that someone has even stumbled upon the thing, I find it a bit annoying that they are using up a small chunk of my bandwidth to show the photo on their site. Why they don't just "save picture as" and post the photo on their site baffles me. But since these clowns are in fact producing their own sites (blogs, picture forums, etc.), I can only assume that they are knowingly stealing my bandwidth.

If I can find a contact on the offending site, I will try diplomacy first. But only one out of the seven have had contact info so far. In the rest of the cases, I have simply renamed the photo and then uploaded a new, horribly offensive photo under the old name.

I find this works in most cases, but it seems a bit harsh. Does anyone have alternative suggestions? Is this a common experience?

But I say one of their biggest flaws is their refusal to acknowledge my right to say no. But then again, that may not be entirely true. After e-mailing ZW, I was told that those who've made significant ad placements in their zine get their subscriptions extended a few issues. Well, that may be their policy. But I still remember telling ZW to cancel my subscription at least a year ago!

Anyway, I say ZW is the worst zine of all time! And it truly pisses me off that they have such high support despite their incompentence. ZW is the G.W. Bush of zinedom! Even though they keep messing up, people like them anyway!Ti' estas viv'!

If you've been wanting to vent your spleen about the Bush regime, US policy, foreign relations, elections, power, money, or anything of the like, this just may be the place and time to do it.

We also welcome submissions on less inflammatory issues (based around the theme of "transitions") in just about any media. It's the web afterall. We prefer SF Bay Area artists, writers and thinkers, as this is an SF-based zine. And if you can tie your submission to the SF Bay Area, even better!

If you are interested in submitting, please write to the editors: zine@atasite.org by Jan 30th and give us a few sentences on what you are interested in sharing with the ATA community and the world!

HARM REDUCTION ZINE

Harm Reduction is a social justice movement dedicated to the health and rights of drug users and their families. Drug users should have the same rights that other citizens are entitled to: the right to freedom from arrest if they have not harmed persons or property, the right to health care, privacy, education, and housing. In addition to this, drug users should enjoy the right to put into their bodies what they want to and should have access to accurate information about drugs and their effects so they can make informed decisions.

I am looking for artwork, photographs, poems, essays, and stories by current drug users, former drug users, and people who work with drug users. People use drugs for many reasons, and many people experience positive benefits from their use. Some people also experience negative outcomes- either from the drugs themselves, or from law enforcement and societal stigmatization. Some people have important information about how to stay healthy while using drugs that they may want to share with other users. Anything related to these themes would be a welcome contribution to the zine.

I hope to begin publishing in June of 2005, so submissions should be in by then. This publication will be Xeroxed and distributed to bookstores and cafes around the country that sell self-published magazines. I will not be able to pay for submissions because I will only be charging enough for the zine to cover the publishing costs, which I estimate will be less than 3 dollars per issue. If you contribute to the zine I will send you some free issues.

You can send your submissions with your name, a psuedonym, or anonymously. I would like to publish the town or city you live in along with your piece, though this isn’t necessary if you prefer I don’t.

Please email all submissions to ellencatalina@yahoo.com. Thanks for your contribution! Feel free to pass this flyer around and tell your friends about it.

From material/physical to conceptual/emotional to geographical, "Transitions" looks at the state of change--when something is not what it used to be, yet not entirely something else--and opens up the awkward stages of development and regression to aesthetic and critical scrutiny.

Proposals for work related to the theme of transitions are due to the editors by January 30, 2005. We are looking for text-based, web-based and anything-in-between-based work by SF Bay Area artists and writers.

Next year's Portland Zine Symposium will be August 5-7. Currently, there is an art contest for its fifth anniversary (August 2005), and you and your friends are invited to become a part of it!

Guidelines: we need a poster design and logo for our fifth anniversary symposium. Our theme is "Celebrating Creating" and the loose theme of celebration and birthday party fun! Your award-winning poster must contain the following information:

*The words "Fifth Annual Portland Zine Symposium"
*The motto "Celebrating Creating"
*the following information: "a three-day conference and zine social exploring facets of underground publishing and DIY culture"
*our web address -- www.pdxzines.com
*our address: Portland State University, Smith Memorial Building in Downtown Portland, Oregon
*August 5-7, 2005
*The poster must be roughly 11" x 17"
*The poster may be black, white and one other color.

Aside from that, it's up to you to create! Good luck! We will compensate all entrants with free t-shirts from last year's symposium -- the winning entrant will get a prize and a free shirt and poster featuring his or her art, as well as the satisfaction of
seeing the art plastered all over town!

Submissions can be mailed to:

Apparently, this zine is produced by a group of friends that hang out together who decided to pick one person in their group and dedicate a zine to them every few weeks or months. So one zine is just all about this Chris Branen guy, the other about a girl named beth. They complete make fun of the chosen person because one of the ideas behind the zine apperently was to prevent "in-gossip" in the group by maligning one another through the zine instead! Also, they are a fine bunch of artists. Would love to put these folks on my network.

If zines are a medium, what is their message?
I have all kinds of ideas about this, all of which I've been exploring [not really in-depth, but...] recently, due to an upcoming proposal deadline for an independent project on the subject. One thing I love about zines is the personal, one-to-one feel of them. Nothing like something coming from the mass media, where you know there are so many constraints, editors, formatting, censorship, quality control, "standards". Zines are like voices right from the crowd, a response rather than "input".

To me, zines are also creation, not production. I have a huge problem with the idea that culture is now something produced which we consume.

You're receiving this note because you have either attended the Allied Media Conference in the past, or have expressed interest in receiving updated information about the conference. Please pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested in attending the Allied Media Conference.

Organizing for AMC2004 has been going full-force since last year's conference was over, and now we're ready to announce that June 18-20, 2004 will be THE weekend for independent media makers and supporters. AMC 2004 will feature sessions on making, networking, and celebrating independent media projects. This year's AMC will also feature the second annual Symposium on Media Literacy in Education -- with workshops and lectures geared specifically toward educators of all stripes. Also on the bill is an all-day independent film festival slated for Saturday, and of course plenty of entertaining activities throughout the weekend.

We're also excited to announce that this year's AMC will be held in Bowling Green State University's new state-of-the-art Student Union, which offers us an ideal environment for both getting down to business and spending quality time networking.

Check out http://www.clamormagazine.org/amc for the latest information on the conference and symposium. There you'll find pre-registration forms, session proposal forms, and other information you'll need to start making your plans to attend.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.
