Hi peeps,
I am compiling a how-to zine for making zines. (basic layout, tips, whatnot e.g. margins, legibility, page layout, copy machine tricks, etc).
Anyone have any tips that they wished someone had told them when they were just starting out? or does this zine already exist and I just haven't found it?
thanks

Re: question for y'all...
Mon, January 30, 2006 - 1:51 PMCheck out Microcosm's "Stolen Sharpie Revolution." I think it's considered the bible of how-to for zinesters, or at least anarcho-zinesters. Lots of stuff on how to steal photocopies, etc. I gave my copy away a long time ago, so I guess it wasn't that useful for me.
Info on how to get your zine to distros might be good. I wish I could figure out how to lay my zine out without having to make the blank pages into a booklet, cut and paste onto them and then laboriously photocopy each page double-sided...this is my least favorite part of the whole process.
Info on how to save money on photocopying might be good, too.
Good luck! -

Mon, January 30, 2006 - 2:22 PM'stolen sharpie revolution' is an unequivocably priceless resource, but it's also too much to absorb in one sitting.
as for photocopying, when i am doing hand layout (e.g. not on the computer) I do one sided originals, and make a really good photocopy of them. That first photocopy becomes the 'original' insofar as I make the other copies from it. That way I can put them in the doc feeder tray. Every other original is turned upside down relative to each other (so that it prints in the right orientation...). Then I set the copier to print 1 to 2 sided. Most of the higher end copiers will do this. All of the ones at kinkos will do this. That way I have a neat stack of originals I can send through in a photocopier at any time and walk away.
so how do you get your zine to distros? (i'm curious...) -

Tue, January 31, 2006 - 10:05 AMYeah, that sounds awesome! I'm a fan of any skill-sharing related to zines.
Speaking of, I posted this last year to "Self-Publishers Unite!" on how to set up pages in Quark XPress. the methodology should apply to just about any dtp/word processing/ graphics program
